In last month’s YAVOH we examined the prophecy of Daniel’s 70 weeks. We considered the possibility of the word “weeks” being a reference to the Feast of Weeks, the annual Biblical festival sometimes called Shavuot or Pentacost. We also looked at the entire prophecy as counting backward from the Messianic kingdom and laying out a sequence of events leading up to the kingdom. The entire prophecy illustrates the last seventy years leading up to the kingdom by counting the annual observance of Shavuot as years.
Daniel’s prophecy specified that the Messiah would be “cut off” and Jerusalem destroyed, which are confirmed first century historical events. The actual 70 years would begin with a decree to restore Jerusalem “with plaza and moat,” followed by 62 years, followed by seven years. Then, during the last seven years preceding the kingdom, the Abomination of Desolation occurs at the halfway point, bringing on the 3½ year Great Tribulation.
